“It was the best present ever,” says Helen Alexander. “It’s almost like a Christmas miracle!”
Heading into the holidays, though, Helen and her husband, Waverly Alexander III, didn’t hold much hope for a joyous season. That’s because the couple’s home needed major attention; the roof was leaking and the floors were buckling. Before his health began to fail, Mr. Alexander, who is a veteran of the U.S. Army, was able to fix anything and everything that might go wrong with the house. But a stroke several years ago no longer makes that possible.
The Alexanders turned to Meals on Wheels Central Texas (MOWCTX) and The Home Depot Foundation (THDF) for help. MOWCTX’s Home Repair program, using funding generously provided by THDF, installed a new roof, new flooring, and new countertops and sinks in November. By the time the holidays rolled around, the house looked and felt brand new.
And that’s a gift the Alexanders deeply appreciate. When asked what MOWCTX and THDF’s assistance means to her and her husband, she says “I’ve been bragging about them to everyone. Financially, we would never have been able to do all of this. The house probably would have fallen apart eventually. Now, we don’t have to worry. It was a blessing.”
